Happy Secular New Year to everyone!  The New Year always brings to mind the idea of new beginnings. People will make lists of items and ideas that they want to implement for the upcoming year. But deep down, has anything really changed from December 31 to January 1st? What we all need to do is add to our list the participation in Kol Ami events.

For many of us, day follows day, night follows night and, all too soon, old age follows maturity, which followed youth. We think back over the days of our lives and only a precious few stand out as being truly special. Yet each of the ordinary days was important for us, just as the journey of our ancestors throughout the desert inspired the strengthening of their love for, and understanding of, God. Just as our ancestors became a nation in the wilderness, we here at Kol Ami have become a community.

For our ancestors as for us, the days of new beginnings were truly special, transforming the wilderness into a garden of memorable days. At this time of year, we need to reinforce our efforts to continue to make Kol Ami “the place to be” by supporting the many different efforts that are going on. Our Prom Night Gala will help keep Kol Ami functioning, but only if everyone contributes funds and participates in the event. The Holy Happy Hour that occurs once a month on Friday evening has been very successful in getting people out to services on Friday night. But we need to have more participation in this happy event for the future. Our Pizza and PJ Shabbat event for young children has attracted a great number of people who truly enjoy their services designed just for the young children. We have had, and will have, some creative and innovative Shabbat services that have brought back remembrances of past years at Kol Ami. All of these things have helped make Kol Ami a community. It is your participation that makes them successful.

Sisterhood has a number of events planned in the new year beginning with our Yoga Day on January 28. This day will see two different yoga classes, one for those who want to learn how to do yoga from a chair and one class for regular yoga. Remember to bring your yoga mats for the regular yoga class. We are also having our Mah Jongg Tournament again this year on February 25th. Space is limited for this event and we are close to filling up, so please sign up early on the Sisterhood page of the Kol Ami website.

I hope to see all of you at the many different things going on at Kol Ami in this new year of 2024!
