Jon Zimmer, Brotherhood President

Shalom Kol Ami!  It’s been a busy time for Brotherhood with many events happening in the near future and other events that have just happened.  Just a few weeks ago, Brotherhood had its first ever Arcade Night at Lowry Parcade (hat tip to Rabbi Marc Blatt for this fun idea).  We had a dozen adults and a few children attend.  Some people schmoozed with friends and had beer.  Others did that while also enjoying playing old school games like NBA Jam and NFL Blitz.  And some even played Addams Family trivia which was going on that night.  This event was open to everyone, and there were men, women, and children present.  With a few rare exceptions, most Brotherhood events are open to all adult members.

We have several things on the horizon.  Sunday, February 12, 2023 is a busy day.  In the morning, we have the Annual World Wide Wrap Day where we learn about the mitzvah of laying tefillin.  Chaired aptly by Brotherhood member Dr. Ron Pross, we will learn about the history of tefillin within the confines of Conservative Judaism, as well as learn or re-learn how to put on tefillin by one of our several “wrap coaches”.  This is open to men and women.

Later that day is the Annual Super Bowl Party at 5:45 PM.  We will have the game on the big screen, watch the game, of course (and the commercials!), enjoy deli sandwiches, chips, snacks, and beverages, and play Super Bowl Squares. The cost to attend the party is $18 for adults, and $10 for kids 12 and under.  We’ll also present the “Kiddush Cup,” the Brotherhood fantasy football trophy, to this year’s winner, none other than Jeff Gad! Please check the Kol Ami website to register for the party and select your dinner option.

One program in the works that we are very excited for is the brand new “Txoko” club.  It’s a men’s cooking club, and each Txoko night will have a theme of a different country.  This event is chaired by Glenn Yancey, who has done several Txoko events at different synagogues.  I have been to several, and it’s a great time filled with laughter, camaraderie, and great food and drink!  This is an active participation cooking club, so if you are interested, please let me know at brotherhood.kolami@gmail.com, and I will let you know when we have our first meeting.

I am always open to ideas and suggestions on how to make Brotherhood more appealing.  Please reach out if you have something of interest to you, and let’s see if we can make it work!

Looking forward to seeing you at shul!

Kol Tuv,

Jon Zimmer
