Aloha, Shalom, and Welcome Back to Kol Yeladim!

Aloha, Kol Yeladim ‘ohana!

It is hard to believe summer is already behind us, and we are gearing up for another incredible year of learning, laughter, and community. I can honestly say I’ve never been more excited to kick off a school year — and that’s saying a lot!

As many of you know, my summer was a bit of a wild ride. I had a blast making memories with my family on some unforgettable adventures. But life had a twist in store for me too: I was diagnosed with breast cancer in June and underwent a double mastectomy at the end of July. It definitely wasn’t on my “bingo card” for 5785, but here we are — recovering, healing, and staying strong.

While this unexpected chapter has been challenging, it has also been filled with so much light and aloha spirit — especially from you, my Kol Ami family. The kindness, encouragement, meals, messages, and love you’ve shared have lifted me in ways I’ll never forget. I am truly humbled and eternally grateful to belong to this vibrant, caring community. Mahalo nui loa — from the bottom of my heart.

Now, I’m looking forward to a new year full of joy, curiosity, and community. Religious School kicks off on Sunday, August 17 at 9 a.m., followed by our Congregational Annual Kick-Off Celebration at 11 a.m. It’s going to be an epic morning, so bring your keiki, your sunscreen, and a friend or two —we love welcoming new faces and showing off the magic of Kol Yeladim!

This year, our theme is Hawaiian, and we’ll be infusing that island warmth and fun into everything we do — from classroom décor to family programs and beyond. Speaking of exciting new adventures: Rabbi Blatt, Shaina Shuford, and I are working on brand-new programming for both our littlest learners and our amazing 8th–12th graders. Keep an eye out for announcements—you won’t want to miss what’s coming!

So grab your leis, put on your brightest smile, and get ready to dive into a year of discovery, ruach (spirit), and connection. It’s going to be a mele (joyful) year—and I am so glad we are on this journey together.

Shalom,
