Dear Kol Ami,
Well, it’s happening. My time as President of our beloved synagogue is coming to an end. I know, hold your applause! These past two years have been filled with challenges, tough decisions, and more meetings than I can count, but also some wonderfully rewarding moments. Serving as President has been an adventure, one part leadership, one part learning curve, and about ten parts “What did I just agree to?” As it ends, it has truly been a fulfilling and heartwarming journey.
When I first stepped into this role, I wasn’t sure what to expect. A crown? A gavel? A secret handshake? Turns out, the real treasure was working alongside a dedicated group of Jews who are just as passionate about our community and Kol Ami as I am (I also did get a crown!). Congregation Kol Ami has always been a place of warmth, joy, and celebration (not to mention, some truly excellent food). Looking back, I couldn’t be prouder of all we’ve accomplished together.
We have strengthened our bonds through prayer, learning, and acts of kindness. We’ve welcomed new members, danced at joyous simchas, and supported each other in times of need. Thanks to our efforts in Relational Judaism, we’ve laid a foundation that will keep Kol Ami thriving for years to come. If building a strong community were an Olympic sport, we’d have so many medals, we’d need a separate Ark just to store them!
To my partners-in-crime, the Executive Committee, the Board of Trustees, Rabbi Blatt, the office staff, committee chairs, and volunteers, you are the real MVPs. Your dedication, passion, and patience (and mastering the art of the polite nod while I rambled on) have been instrumental in our success. Thank you to your families for lending us your loved ones. We know synagogue work sometimes means late nights and early mornings, and your support has made all the difference.
To those stepping up to lead next, welcome to the best gig in town! It’s a big job, but one filled with so much meaning and joy. I have no doubt that you will lead Kol Ami forward with wisdom, leadership, and maybe even fewer meetings (stranger things have happened—like finding a good parking spot on the High Holidays!). And while we search for a worthy successor, I will be forever grateful that you, Mitch Weiss extended your service to Kol Ami and wish you all the best in your retirement.
While I may be handing over the official duties, my love for this congregation isn’t going anywhere. You’ll still find me here, praying, learning, laughing, and yes, offering unsolicited advice or even a quick wit when you least expect it.
B’Shalom,
Kevin Cross-President
